The Great Book of Salavala

Closing Passage

The Song That Remains

And the Seeker said:

"I looked for the Sampo in hidden chambers,
beneath mountains, beneath temples,
beneath the tongues of the dead.
I searched for it in stars, in runes,
in thunder, in the names of gods.
Yet always it moved away from me."

And the Charioteer answered:

"You could not find it because you searched as an owner.
The Sampo does not open to possession.
It opens to alignment.

When your hand acts without grasping, it turns.
When your song rises without vanity, it turns.
When your heart loves without demanding, it turns.
When your mind becomes clear enough
to reflect the source, it turns.

The Sampo is the wheel of awakened participation.
It was never lost.
Only forgotten."

Then the Seeker bowed beside the River of Tuonela,
and saw that its black waters
held the stars without swallowing them.

And he understood.

Not that he must leave the world,
but that he must enter it correctly.

And so he took up the kantele,
and returned.
